Onsite Nursing Simulation Lab in Houston, Texas

While you’ll learn critical nursing concepts as part of the online coursework component of our accelerated BSN, you can’t become an accomplished nurse without hands-on experience. That’s why another key part of the ABSN program at UST involves nursing skills and simulation labs.

At our ABSN program sites in Shenandoah and Sugar Land or our main campus in downtown Houston, you’ll work with instructors and classmates on developing and honing your nursing skills and clinical judgment using high-tech medical manikins and state-of-the-art equipment. Here, you’ll also gain confidence in developing critical nursing skills before doing so in a real-world environment during clinical rotations.

Skills Labs

Our accelerated BSN skills labs mimic the hospital setting and feature all the high-tech medical equipment and supplies you’d expect to find in such an environment, as well as realistic medical manikins. Combined with nursing theory knowledge learned in the online portion of our ABSN program, you’ll use this facility and its tools to hone such nursing skills as:

Nursing Simulation Lab

Once you master the skills of nursing, you’ll put them to the test during nursing simulation labs. It’s during these realistic patient care scenarios that students’ critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills will be challenged in a risk-free environment.

Throughout the program, students participate in mock clinical scenarios focused on specific learning objectives, take on various roles—patient, family member, doctor, or nurse—to gain key perspectives from all sides of the situation, and learn how to communicate effectively.

The goal of this portion of your accelerated nursing education isn’t to get everything perfect the first time. Nursing simulation lab experiences allow growth without affecting a patient’s health. Simulation labs can be split into three steps:

  • Preparation: Students must ensure they have reviewed relevant materials and are ready to meet the simulation brief.
  • Simulation: Students work through the simulation with their peers under the observation of their instructor.
  • Debrief: Instructors offer constructive criticism, what went well and what needs improvement, allowing classmates to reflect on the experience and learn from it without judgment.
