Admissions Process for University of St. Thomas ABSN Program

Are you ready to jumpstart your nursing education through the University of St. Thomas Houston’s Accelerated BSN (ABSN) program? Here are the first steps in the ABSN admissions process.

1. Talk to an Admissions Advisor

The University of St. Thomas ABSN admissions process begins as soon as you complete the form on this website. Doing so allows our admissions team to know you’re ready to discuss your academic qualifications and nursing career goals as well as to determine whether you’re a good fit for our program. On this call, you’ll connect with an admissions advisor who will serve as your main point of contact throughout the rest of the admissions process. It’s also during this conversation that you’ll have the chance to have your questions answered and receive more details about the program admissions requirements.

2. Make an Academic Plan

Upon determining your eligibility for our ABSN program, your admissions advisor will work with you to design a plan to ensure you meet your target start date goal—either January, May or August.

3. Complete Prerequisites

While the UST ABSN program doesn’t require you to have any prior healthcare experience to apply, you must meet certain academic requirements. Your admissions advisor will help you register for all the necessary prerequisite courses before checking in periodically to help you stay focused and on track to pass these courses with the minimum grade requirement of C or higher (B- or higher for Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II and Microbiology).

Please note: At least (2) of the prerequisite requirements must be completed prior to submitting your application.

4. Take An Admission Assessment Exam

To be admitted into our accelerated nursing program, you must pass all five component tests of the Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) Admission Assessment exam — Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary & General Knowledge, Math, and Anatomy & Physiology — with an 80% or higher and pass with an overall score of 80% or higher. Alternatively, students may gain admittance with a passing score of 78% on all sections of the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).

5. Apply

With all the above steps completed, you’re ready to finalize your ABSN program application.

FAQ

How Will I Know if I Have to Complete Prerequisites?

Before enrolling in the ABSN program, you must complete — or show you have already completed — four prerequisite courses within our specified grade requirements through any regionally accredited college or university. An admissions advisor will review your unofficial transcripts with you over the phone and determine whether any of your prior undergraduate credits will count toward this requirement. The prerequisite requirements do not have to be completed prior to submitting your application.

What Qualifications Do I Need to Get Into Accelerated Nursing School?

The ABSN program has two pathways to admission: transfer and second degree. In addition to 60 non-nursing college credits or a non-nursing bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, you must also have:

1) Completed the prerequisites within our specified grade requirements prior to enrollment.

2) A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, including a 3.0 GPA for all science courses.

3) A minimum score of 80 on the Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) admission assessment exam on all five component tests.

4) Completed the interview and review processes.
